BOOK OF THE DAY

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life - by Barbara Kingsolver with Steven L. Hopp and Camille Kingsolver

Inspired to live in a place that could sensibly feed them, acclaimed writer Barbara Kingsolver and her family picked up and moved from Tucson, Arizona, to a family farm in southern Appalachia to eat only food harvested on their own land or on local farms (and, to be honest, fair-trade coffee). Part memoir, part investigation into the consequences of mass-produced food (both to the environment and to our health), Animal, Vegetable, Miracle includes everything from ruminations on growing asparagus to an exposé of industrial agriculture to recipes, for both Kingsolver's husband, a biologist, and her 19-year-old daughter helped write this book. Grab it for a compulsively readable and thought-provoking experience.
